It is indeed my pleasure to welcome you to the School of Health Sciences at the University of Goroka (UOG). I would like to thank you for choosing UoG to study in one of our three programs – PVTE Health Education and Health Teaching and Midwifery. Brief history

The School of Health Science started in year 1987 with the pioneer program - Diploma in health education. Three (3) years later, the Diploma for health teaching was introduced. Bachelor of midwifery is our recent program introduced. The three programs are staffed by five lecturers of the health division. We are currently developing three (3) new programs and elevating existing Diploma Health Teaching to Bachelor level. Post Graduate Diploma in of Child Health Nursing, Diploma in Health Management and Diploma in Public Health. Our new program (Bachelor in Health Teaching) will commence starting in 2025.

 PROGRAMS OFFERED 

 

The bachelor of Midwifery Program is evidence of a strategy adopted by Papua New Guinea in reducing it high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. The curriculum is designed to prepare effective midwives able to work across the full range of clinical environments where midwives provide care to child bearing women and their families in both rural and urban areas. The curriculum is comprised of four clinical and ten theoretical subjects with an overall distribution of 60% clinical and 40 % theoretical subjects which meet the standards of the International Confederation of Midwives.

Subsequent to registration in PNG as a general nurse and enrolment in a Bachelor of Midwifery course, students complete their program of study over an 18 month period. Student’s complete clinical practice and theoretical assessments throughout their course of study designed to ensure the graduate has mastered the full range of skills required as an effective midwife in Papua New Guinea.

 

Entry Requirement

  1. Be registerable by PNGNC including those registered in other countries with Diploma

  2. Applicants will have two years (2) post registration experience as a general nurse prior to entering the midwifery program including six months (6) in an area of maternity care

  3. Midwifery candidate are admitted in keeping with the national health policies and maternity workforce plans

3 Semesters

Entry Requirement

A student admitted to shall:

  1. Have a minimum of Grade 12 Education and a Diploma in a specific field;

  2. Hold appropriate vocational and technical qualification in Health Technical fields and;

  3. Have relevant work experience of more than 5 years; and

  4. TVET candidates must possess a Trade Certificate IV (NCIV).

Program Duration

8 Semesters

Entry Requirement

A student admitted to shall:

  1. Have a minimum of Grade 12 Education and a Diploma in a specific field;

  2. Hold appropriate vocational and technical qualification in Health Technical fields and;

  3. Have relevant work experience of more than 5 years; and
