Acting Head of Division
Welcome to the Division of Applied Science. It is one of the four divisions in the Institute of Technical Vocational Education Training (ITVET).
This is the division that contributes to improving the quality of life for individuals, families and households through the management of their resources. The core focus of the courses offered in this division is primarily concerned with the wellbeing of families, the individuals and the community as a whole, to live a better life by raising their standard of living through knowledge and skills gained through this program.
The division offers three programs; Bachelor of Applied Science and Bachelor of Teaching Applied Science and Bachelors in Human Nutrition. The teacher training program offers training in the areas of Food Science, Food Technology, Dietetic, Textile Science and Technology, Fashion Design and Tailoring, Human Development, Family Studies and Community Studies. The program trains budding teachers the skill and knowledge to teach in the junior high schools, vocational schools, senior high schools and technical high schools.
Bachelor of Applied Science program focuses on training skills in the areas of Food Science, Food Technology, Dietetic, Textile Science and Technology, Fashion Design and Tailoring, Human Development, Family Studies and Community Studies. This content program trains students to gain content and skills for various job opportunities in the Food and Textiles industries, Social Services, Health Department, Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and others. The training also focuses on skills for the person for self-employment.
We hope to offer the third program, Bachelor in Human Nutrition in 2025. This program is developed to support and address the government’s initiative to improve the nutritional and health status of Papua New Guinea. It is common knowledge that the Malnutrition profile of PNG is at its worst. Many researches by various organisations have indicated bad to worse cases of malnutrition of all forms across the population. Stunting amongst children seems to be the worst. It is imperative for this program to be offered.
Our courses are offered on campus owing to the practical nature of the courses. The Division is in the process of getting accreditation for the two programs; Bachelor of Applied Science and Bachelor of Teaching Applied Science. Eligible candidates of school leavers, non-school leavers and those with other qualifications and or experiences as deemed appropriate by the University Of Goroka, may apply.
