For the overall coordination of all research activities at the University, the Somare Research Institute (SRI) was conceived by the Top Management Team in 2018 and set up in 2019. The Somare Research Institute is named in honour of the Founding Father of Papua New Guinea, Great Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare.

The University of Goroka's Corporate and Strategic Plan (2023-2027) features Research, Innovation, and Development in Pillar No. 3. It also captures University-Community Engagement for Sustainable Development in Pillar No. 5, and Partnership, Linkage and Collaboration in Pillar No. 8. These are the grounds for University to actively engage in research activities and foster collaborations with local communities not only in Papua New Guinea and the broader Melanesian region but also across the Pacific and globally. The establishment of the SRI was designed to promote and drive research and innovation, serving as a coordinating and regulatory body for the fostering of all research and publication activities at the University, as well as enabling compliance with national government research policy initiatives.

Since a major proportion of the research and publication activities in the university is carried out by students and their supervisors in the School of Post Graduate Studies, the Institute and the School are closely linked. Hence the SRI will collaborate closely with the school in all matters to do with research policy, coordination, promotion and quality assurance.
